The Video Dead (1987)

Plot Overview

A TV acts as a gateway for zombies to enter our world and go on killing sprees. When the Blair family come into possession of the TV, Jeff and Zoe must find a way to stop the zombies for good.

I’ve been wanting to see this for a while and thought it would either be awesome or terrible, but it ends up not really being either. For a low-budget horror movie, it’s surprisingly decent. Some of the dialogue is hilarious; “but skunks don’t like to mate with poodles!” and it’s clearly having fun with itself and not taking it too seriously.

The acting is about typical for a low-budget film, but all the characters feel warm and watchable, with the exception of Roxanna Augesen as Zoe. I thought Jeff was quite a likable lead and was a bit disappointed that Rocky Duvall wasn’t in anything else.

The effects ranged between ok and bad, but that wasn’t a big deal. The zombies were quite fun. Unfortunately the film is a bit bland even with all aspects being ok. There are some funny moments, but nothing that ‘makes’ the film. It’s a bit slow and not much really happens. The gory bits are alright, but nothing special.

While it’s a fairly solid low-budget/straight-to-video film, it’s not really as fun as it should be. I’d still recommend it to fans of the genre, but it’s not quite hilarious enough to be a fun comedy and it’s not gory and insane enough to be a fun splatterfest.
