They Shoot Zombies, Don’t They?

This is a project I’ve decided to overtake after being disappointed in my search for a really good canonical horror list. Normally this disappointment sets in from having already seen all the films on a list, but also from not knowing where to start to find more. This is an attempt to create a ranked ‘Best Horror Films Ever’ list to end all the lists.

I’ve gathered up as many ‘best’ horror lists that I can find, assigned a weighting depending on the ‘quality’ of the author of the list. This weighting is very loosely defined as horror lists are hard to come by due to high caliber critics’ dismissal of horror and needing to rely on the few horror critics around, various polls, magazines, sites, forums, random horror buffs and people who have just made favourite lists. Subgenre and yearly/decade lists are weighted lower than other lists as well.

At the moment, I’m still fine tuning all the details; how to classify lists, which point system to use, how to distribute the points, which lists to include etc etc. I’m making it public now in the hopes that I can get pointed in the direction of lists I’ve missed. The current version of the list can be found here.

Problems so far:

  • Lack of quality sources – not many critics lists. Also not many well-known bloggers/forums/sites/magazines with lists, especially past a top 10. Having to use a lot of ‘random people’ lists, and also some obvious horror buffs (but still just random horror fans).
  • Lack of decent sized lists – lots of top 10s. Some top 100s.
  • Lack of all-time lists – a lot of ‘best films of the decade’ or ‘best films of 2013’, but all-time lists hard to come by and most of those then have the above issue of being very small.
  • How to weight lists – Obviously lists by critics and large polls are going to need to be weighted higher than those by random people. But how big should the difference be? There are a lot more lower caliber lists than high + medium together at the moment.
  • How to classify lists – I’ve used my own judgment to classify them so far. A critic or website or poll is ‘high’, a forum or well-known blog is ‘medium’, personal random favourite lists, subgenre lists and decade/yearly lists are ‘low’. Do we need more? Are some of my classifications wrong (most probably)?
  • Future list sources – If it’s this hard to find lists now, where am I going to find future lists? It’s not like there are many publications and critics regularly churning out new horror lists. Yearly and decade lists might be easy to find, but the classics will suffer.
